St Patricks Marist College

Sports

The structure of our internal sports programs allows for students in Years 7 and 8 to participate in a variety of settings and contexts that will help develop their skill development. One of the main features of the Year 7 and 8 programme is their swimming skills. For Year 7, they once again had another successful 5 week programme of swimming that was undertaken at Ryde Aquatic Centre. The programme allowed for all participants of differing abilities to participate, have fun and enjoy themselves. The Year 8 Beach Skills programme is still as popular as ever and will continue in 2008, once again at Manly Beach. The internal Years 7 and 8 school sports, provides the opportunity for students to participate in a range of sports, varying from Ultimate Vortex to AFL. Throughout the sports participation, we hope that students cannot only get some physical benefit, but also develop their leadership and the ability to co-operate with their peers.

For Years 9 and 10, a majority of their sport occurs at external venues. Once again we provide a focus in Years 9 and 10 on swimming. This is done through their participation in the Bronze Medallion Levels I & II course. These are invaluable tools that the students can use in any aspect of their future endeavours. Most of the sports offered in Years 9 and 10 are conducted at various external venues. This once again will hopefully allow these students to experience different settings of exercise, and the benefits that are obtained from regular physical activity.

Years 11 and 12 are provided the opportunity to select their sports. One of the most popular sports has been Lawn Bowls conducted at Rydalmere. Where free soft drink is one of the main attractions. It is excellent that these students have the ability to access these services. Hopefully in 2008 we can expand these services to provide even more chances for students to develop their physical fitness and skills.

Our representative programs are continuing to be successful within our respective competitions. Being a co-educational school, it can be difficult to compete against the single sex schools. We always participate to the best of our abilities and are endeavouring to improve our results throughout these competitions. Within the MCS competition the boys have once again represented the school at an excellent level. Our School Athletics team continues to develop with 5 boys gaining MCS representative honours. Also congratulations goes to the Under 14’s AFL team who in the inaugural year of the competition were Grand Finalists. Congratulations to these boys. We will hopefully continue to develop in the MCS Sports competition and still continue to compete against the MCS has to offer.

The girls continue to compete at an excellent level in the MCCS competition. The consistency in the girls' performances and abilities are second to none. The girls are constantly competing in many finals throughout the year. Congratulations to the Intermediate Soccer teams who were Grand Final champions and to the Senior Girls' Touch Football, Year 9 and B Grade Netball, the Intermediate Basketball and Volleyball who were all Grand Finalists. Our girl’s athletics squad needs special mention with 4 girls representing the College and Diocese at the NSW CCC Carnival. Congratulations to all the girls in the MCCS Teams.
